One Brush, Two Generations:

CCSS’s Lunar New Year Story on Fairchild TV

This Lunar New Year, Fairchild Television shared a story that captured the heart of Connections Community Services Society (CCSS)—where calligraphy, culture and community brought generations together.

During the Lunar New Year period, a senior calligraphy master and a youth volunteer set up a calligraphy station at a Richmond shopping centre, writing traditional Fai Chun (Chinese New Year banners) on-site.

Ronald Zhang, the senior calligrapher, shared that handwritten calligraphy carries a spirit that printed text cannot replace. Even when writing the same character, the result can differ depending on one’s mindset and emotions—giving each piece its own life and meaning.

With the arrival of the Year of the Horse, many visitors requested banners themed around “horse,” paired with symmetrical blessing phrases symbolizing good fortune and balance. Other popular requests featured the character “Fu” (福), representing happiness, prosperity and positive energy for the year ahead.

Aiden Luo, the youth volunteer, who has studied calligraphy for over ten years, shared how participating in the event allowed him to express wishes for academic success while helping preserve a traditional art form. Through brush and ink, the fundraising event connected two generations—demonstrating how cultural heritage can continue to be shared, learned, and celebrated within the community.
