Supporting Youth During Rising Unemployment

CCSS shares insights with OMNI News on rising youth unemployment. (OMNI TV)

Connections Community Services Society (CCSS) was honoured to be interviewed by Fairchild Radio AM1470 and OMNI News to discuss the growing challenges facing young people in Canada, particularly as youth unemployment rose in the second half of 2025.

According to recent national data, youth unemployment has climbed to 13.3%, with thousands of jobs lost among individuals aged 15 to 24. In the interviews, CCSS highlighted that this trend reflects not only economic uncertainty, but also the fast-changing employment landscape influenced by the increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) in workplaces.

CCSS Operations and Fund Development Manager Joshua Wong shared that many young job seekers already have professional training and strong abilities, yet still face barriers to employment. This is especially true in industries currently experiencing major disruption, such as film, animation, and other creative sectors, where hiring has slowed and technology is rapidly shifting job requirements.

At the same time, some youth may struggle because they lack exposure to alternative career pathways or do not yet have the skills and networks needed to pivot into new sectors. These challenges can make job searching discouraging—especially for youth who are eager to contribute but uncertain about their next step.

During both interviews, CCSS emphasized that meaningful support goes beyond job searching alone. In addition to career guidance and employment counselling, CCSS encouraged youth to consider volunteering and community involvement as a practical way to stay active, build confidence, and develop transferable skills.

Volunteering can help youth:

.Learn new workplace and communication skills
.Gain Canadian experience and references
.Build professional and community connections
.Combine existing strengths with new opportunities
.Stay motivated and engaged while job searching

CCSS believes that strong community networks create stronger futures. By staying connected, learning through service, and building real-world experience, youth can expand their opportunities and increase their chances of re-entering the workforce with greater confidence.

We thank AM1470 and OMNI News for the opportunity to share CCSS’s perspective and to advocate for youth in our community. CCSS remains committed to empowering young people through career development support, community programs, and meaningful connections.
